Mozart Monument in Salzburg
Enjoy sightseeing in Salzburg
Visit the Mozartplatz in Salzburg, which is located in the old town and see the 3 metre high monument of the world-famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The monument has been there for over 150 years.
The Mozart monument was made by Ludwig Schwanthaler. In 1842 the statue was unveiled in the presence of Mozart’s sons. Constanze von Nissen, Mozart’s wife, died six months before the monument was completed.
Mozart square: “Michel” has to go
There had been a lot of arguments as to the perfect location for a Mozart statue. At the place where Mozart’s monument is today, there used to be a statue of Saint Michael “Michel”. In the middle of the 19th century, by order of the Bavarian King Ludwig I., this was ordered to be removed to make room for the Mozart statue.
Mozart square and the old town
Because the Mozartplatz in Salzburg is located in the old town, a visit to the Mozart monument can be combined with a lovely sightseeing tour. Next to the statue you will find the entrance to the Salzburg museum, where you can learn more about the history of Salzburg.
Only a few metres away, at the end of the Residenz square, the Salzburg Residence awaits you which houses the Residenz art gallery. We also recommend a horse and carriage ride through the city of Salzburg followed by coffee and cake at one of the traditional cafés in the town, such as ‘Tomaselli’ or ‘Demel’.
